PATCHWORK LANDSCAPES
This is a piece where I used English Paper Piecing, or EPP, to make the background.
It was the first time I had tried this technique for a landscape, but it does seem to be the very best way to depict the patchwork fields that are ubiquitous of the British countryside, as well as many other places.
The mapping out the fields in their various shapes and designs was actually simpler than I thought it would be.
Plus it came together far quicker than it does to stitch lots of hexagons.
I have had the experience of stitching hexagons for this project, back in 2017, and I do plan to finish it some day.
After dislocating my elbow, this, as well as some easy crochet, was part of my rehabilitation, and it helped tremendously.
Here is proof that I get around to stitching on it.
While the above landscape was under construction it became clear that the project leaned into the ethos of slow stitching and mindful, deliberate making.
So I made more, and even did a bit of machine stitching on one of them.
My journey with improvisational EPP is not over yet, and if you would like to create your own landscapes using this technique, I have just launched my first standalone online course that guides you step by step through the process.
