MEDITATIVE MINI QUILTS
Back in April 2024 I began an easy low key project that would help me to use up some of the many small fabric scraps that I have accumulated over the years.
These particular scraps came from the bags I had accumulated while teaching a landscape workshop over a number of years.
As we enter 2026, I find that I am still enjoying making these mini quilts for the following reasons.
BEFORE STARTING I GOT ORGANISED.
I washed and pressed the scraps and sorted them into these zip bags.
In all honesty this being organised thing is not something that comes easy to me, but it was so worth it.
I SORTED MY FABRIC INTO THE FOLLOWING:
Rectangles and squares.
Strips.
Odd shapes.
Commercially printed fabrics.
Fused pieces.
Colours that need their own bag.
WHY MAKE MINI QUILTS?
They use up scraps, which is never a bad thing.
Making these slow stitched blocks are a great way to slow down and calm the nervous system.
They are experiments that could give you ideas for future work.
They are also a great way to get the creative spark flowing. As they say, *inspiration finds you working.
*yes I know that quote was by Pablo Picasso.
If you are inspired to make your own mini quilts then here are a few tips:
GET ORGANISED. It has made a huge difference to me to know that at anytime I can pull out these bags and have the scraps I need ready to go.
MIX THINGS UP. Stitch by hand or machine, or mix things up. whatever suits you and your way of working.
COLOUR COMBOS. I have enjoyed making my minis in colour themes, but don’t forget to pull colours from different bags and see what colour combos inspire you.
